An educational trip to Kelantan had been conducted by Technology, Education and Career 2010 (TEC X) organising committee in collaboration with Student Support Services department (SSSD) on the previous mid – semester break. There are 10 participants joined, which are including few final year students, as well as few TEC X committee members. Together with our team are the advisor of TEC X himself, Mr. Idham B Che Ghani and Mr. Jailani B Zubir Ahmad.

The journey started on 15th March 2010, in which the team departed from UTP to Kelantan at night. After 8 hours of journey, we finally arrived at Kelantan. After preparing selves for the day, our journey continues to the 1st destination of the trip, which is Malaysian Royal Air Force at Gong Kedak. As soon as we arrive at the base, we were being welcomed by the officers there. Then, we were being briefed by Kapten Hasrul regarding the basic information about the base itself, as well as career future in Air Force. We were also informed that the specialty of Gong Kedak’s base is that they are the base that operates Malaysia’s Jet Fighter, which is SUKHOI (Su30-MKM). In the base, there are 18 jets available to be operated, and every flight, there will be 2 jets will be used per day.

After briefing, we were brought to visit the hanger (place where the jets are being repaired) and the Air Traffic Controller (ATC). Before visiting the air traffic controller, we had experienced on riding the fire truck. We were demonstrated by the officer on how to distinguish the fire if conflagration occurred. After having fun played with the technology in the fire truck, then we went to the ATC. In ATC, we were briefed on what is the function of ATC itself. We were also demonstrated on action to be taken if fire incident occurred.

As the session at the ATC ended, the visitation to Gong Kedak’s Air Force base is come to its end. Our advisor gave the officers a few UTP merchandise as token of appreciation and thanks them on their effort to escort us along the visitation session.

Next, we continue our journey to SMS Faris Petra, for checking in purposes. After resting few hours, we had a tour around Kota Bharu. As we touring around the area, we found that there are few interesting facts in which there is Arabic writing in most of the bill board on the shops, as well as in the mall. After 3 hours, we finally returned to our respective hostel.

Next morning, we continue the educational trip with the trip to ROHM – WAKO Electronics at Pengkalan Chepa. Our team was welcomed by Mr. Helmi and his cliques. Our visit started with short briefing from Miss. Fathira. She briefly explained about what are the vision and mission of the company as well as informed us about their products. Basically their company produces diode and Light Emission Diode (LED).

We had our breakfast after the briefing session. Then the trip proceeds with tour around the factory. We were explained that the company followed Japanese tradition, like using Japanese language as their main communication language. We were also told that their workers will be given extra allowance if they can speak Japanese fluently. In addition to that, we were also informed that if there are new comers, the new comers will be experiencing few orientation days, in which they will be exposed about the company’s culture such as principle and regulations. Next, as we were explained about the process needed, the trip has come to the end. Before leaving, we got the chance to take few pictures with staffs there and thanked them for their time escorting us.

As the visitation to ROHM – WAKO ends, the educational trip has come to the end. After spending few hours at Rantau Abang, we went back and arrived at UTP at night.

People say a thousand steps begin by the first step. As the words saying, a step is always small, but the seconds step does not follow without the first one. On 24th Febuary 2010, Seminar and Forum Department TEC X has stepped to third event of their accomplishment which is Intern-Share Forum. Intern-Share Forum, as the name goes was a forum which main purpose is to increase awareness of the real working situation among students and to expose the student with the routes of their career paths.

This year, Intern-Share Forum was brought to the audience by the collaboration of TEC X and Student Industrial Internship Unit (SIIU). With a new concept of modern forum, Intern-Share Forum was held in the mainhall of UTP. The panelists were consisting of four prominent speakers. Two of them are UTP’s alumni itself and the other two are remarkable panelists who were specially invited from PETRONAS Research and Intel. The Alumnies UTP were Muhammad Aizat bin Abu Bakar, PETRONAS Carigali Drilling Engeering, and Thanikaimani Elamparuthi, Business Development Manager MISC. While the other are Syed Omar bin Syekh Alsagoff, Former PETRONAS Sauber F1 Engineer, and Mohd Parid B Sulaiman, Engineering Director World Wide Product Engineering Intel.

The forum started at 3.00 pm with total audience of about 100 participants. However, this was not the total targeted audience. The secretariat felt very sorry to hear that other students were unable to come due to certain circumstances. Meanwhile, the forum had become more interesting with only very participative audience. “Graduates Competitiveness in Global Job Market” was a wonderful topic. All the panelists managed to share their knowledge and experience with the participants. With added humor by the moderator, Dr Mohamad Naufal Bin Mohamad Saad, the forum was no other than a great success.

Finally, the forum was closed with a question and answer session. Various questions were thrown to the panellists. Later, the panellists gave out their contact to the participants to further share their experience. The forum closed at 5.00 pm and some participants had their time talking personally with the panellists. Mr. Affendy congratulated the secretariat for their effort and assistant.

7.45 am – A group of final year students already come for registration. They all look very passionate to participate in JIW.

8.00 am – The registration counter was opened. Registered students were given a pocket file to be used during the whole JIW.

9.00 am – The first session was delivered by Pn. With the students being patiently waited from the morning, they give an outstanding participation in this morning session. Pn. Zuraida explained extensively about current global employment outlook, enhancing graduates employability as well as opportunities to work with PETRONAS.

“Never mention your weaknesses, mention it as your gap, your development area.”

Zuraida Zainal Abidin

Talisman speaker with full of spirit

11.15 am – After the first session, students were given 15 minutes morning break. Later, Pn.
3.30 pm – Evening session was quite a challenge. Students were starting to exhaust. Mr. Yazid Misnan, Senior Human Resource Manager of Motorola and his team take down-to-earth approach to tackle students towards his presentation. Mr. Yazid focused very much on non-verbal communication techniques of the interview which includes hand shaking, walking style, talking pace and volume, sitting style, and appearance.

“The only thing you want the interviewer to see is your face, not your scarf’s pins, earrings or your beautiful dresses”

5.00 pm – Finally, JIW 2010 has come to an end. Mr. Mohd Shafiq Fhadly Mahmud, from Sarawak Shell Berhad handled the last session with a very serious mood. He did put some humors, but he really stress on his presentation. Students were silent from his detail and real situation explanation on how to tackle an interview. He even gave the students confidential tips on performing in a phone interview.

“Do you answer a question with ‘I don’t know’? No! You don’t do that”

Mr. Mohd Shafiq Fhadly Mahmud

Doing activities

JIW 2010 ends at 6.30 pm. Various inputs, tips and advices were given to us. The only things left are for us to apply it in ourselves. Hopefully, the students and secretariats got to learn a lot and improve tremendously later in their future career.
