Talk by Mr Idham: “Marketable Graduates”

Mr Idham began by speaking about the performance of UTP graduates in their careers over the past few years in their career. One important issue that concerns the final year students is the potentially restrictive bonding to the respective companies. A secondary concern is the  lack of preparation and low CGPA among certain students which delays the employment process.

Another  issue raised by Mr. Idham was that a number of students have failed to provide valid contact numbers. This causes difficulties and delays  the ability to update students regarding job opportunities. Mr. Idham stressed the importance of providing current telephone numbers and email addresses.

Currently, there is stiff competition for ladies as a result of the increasing number of female graduates each year. This is compounded by the present world economic difficulties. As Mr Idham advised:

“Due to the current global situation, students must well equip themselves with three most important features within themselves, which are being proactive, aggressive and prepared with strategies of how to enter the job market.”

Further important features are: a very good command of English; a CGPA of 3.00 and above; and hands-on experience gained through an Internship program.

Although PETRONAS has strict entry policies which  include rigid medical checks and the contractual obligations of Petronas scholars, UTP students will not have to worry about the condition of the market. Mr.Idham stated that UTP students should display  their strengths  by providing details of their CGPA; awards received; Engineering Team Project; Internship program; extracurricular  projects conducted on or off  campus, and also participation in the Engineering Design Exhibition or EDX.
